Opportunities for 10th Graders (Sophomores)
904 listings accept 10th graders, and 339 are open to apply now.
Sophomore year is when a lot more opens up. Many summer programs, paid youth jobs and pre-college programs start accepting students in 10th grade, and some research and internship programs take sophomores even when they're aimed mainly at juniors.
This is a good year to turn an interest into something concrete: a summer program in the subject you like most, a leadership role in something you already do, or a first job. Apply to several, because the bigger programs are selective.

Common questions
Can sophomores do research?
Some programs take them, especially university and museum programs that teach research skills rather than expecting them. The most selective lab placements usually start in 11th grade.
Do sophomores get paid internships or jobs?
Yes. City summer youth employment programs, park and conservation corps, and many teen jobs hire from age 15 or 16. Look for listings marked paid.
When should a sophomore start applying for summer programs?
Usually in the winter, between December and March, though some deadlines fall in the fall. Check each listing's deadline and save the ones you want so you don't miss them.
