Computer science is the single most crowded interest area in extracurriculars right now, which cuts both ways: there are genuinely more opportunities than in almost any other subject, but the well-known names (the famous summer programs, the biggest hackathons) are also the most competitive. Less-known university outreach programs and smaller regional hackathons tend to have dramatically better odds while teaching the same skills.
A real, finished project — even a small one — is usually worth more on an application than a certificate from a course you completed but never applied. If you're choosing between a structured course and a self-directed build, and you can sustain the self-directed one, it's often the stronger choice.
